Nice thought, but not too realistic. I am still expecting the EU to just tell each other to screw off. It is human nature to seek out and be a member of individual communities, whether those are clubs, towns, state, countries, etc. I do not expect the world will ever be one big happy family.

Actually, by spurring all members to display their flags I think defeats your (OP's) intended purpose of bringing everyone closer together. The different flags represent different groups and ways of thinking, which is contrary to a singular entity and purpose.

I think that was one of the original ideas and intentions of the United Nations. It hasn't really worked. There are numerous disagreements even among its own members. As long as there are the "haves" and the "have nots", there will be politics and disagreements. Some will shirk doing their fair share, while others are forced to do more. You also have to remember that humans have memories and feelings. For many, it is very difficult to set those things aside and be "one" and embrace your neighbor, whom might have been your centuries/generations-old "enemy" only yesterday.

Even when such things as "global warming" will impact EVERYONE come into play, there are nations that try to position themselves to take advantage of others or to declare that they are exempt from participating.

Altruism and a unified planet is a noble ideal, but the human condition and mindset needs to change dramatically before more progress can be attained.
