On July 20, 1969 at 4:17PM EDT Man landed on the moon!
I was 11 at the time and I remember that day and that moment like it was yesterday!!
I had followed the entire space program, especially the Gemini program with a HUGE fascination bordering on obsession.
That moment was the single most incredible highlight of my young life!
I remember after the landing, going outside and riding my bike around the neighborhood, looking up and actually seeing the moon and being dumbfounded with the thought that there where actually three men there...
At 02:56AM ET on July 21, 1969, Armstrong stepped off the ladder from the LEM and set foot on the surface of the moon for the very first time..
I and my family watched in silence, totally mesmerized by the event.. We ALL where speechless. Overwhelmed..
Those immortal words, 'one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' echoed in our ears....
TRULY a historic event!
Yes there where other lunar landings, other EVAs. Yes, we American's could not HELP but take a freakin SUV to the moon with us, take a golf shot etc. but that first moment..... My LORD that was something....
I feel sorry for all of you who where not there to experience it...
Contrary to what a lot of folks might think, that famous photo above is NOT Neil Armstrong but Buzz Aldrin...
They were higher than we were, but not by much.
But not forgettable.
But it was a hell of an event.!!!
I was VERY lucky.. I was in that 'cohort' of people who NEVER had to register for the draft.. Ever..
My brother who was 8 years older than me on the other hand... Well he had a very low lottery number but he did have a differement WHICH he came within a pubic hair of loosing his first year in college. That was 1967.. Lucky for him, he got his act together and well, the rest is history...
