The "Western" has pretty much died out these days, at one time there were plenty of films at the cinema and t.v.series and they all had magnificent music themes too. Last night (20.8.22), the 1958 film "The Big Country" starring Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston and Burl Ives was shown with my number 1 favourite film music of ALL time, composed by Jerome Moross, a magnificent sweep of music which really conjures up the wide open spaces of 19th Century America. The similarly titled 1960s t.v. series "The Big Valley" starring Barbara Stanwyck, Lee Majors and Linda Evans also had a great theme tune by George Duning and who can forget Elmer Bernstein's awesome theme to the original 1960 version of "The Magnificent Seven"? TCM Movies is currently showing all the old late 1950s/early 1960s series "Sugarfoot" starring the very sexy Will Hutchins who is still alive, now aged 92. What are your favourite "westerns" and your favourite "westerns" music too?

"Deadwood" was an HBO series in the mid-2000s. A muddy dirty more realistic western with a strong cast. Worth checking out.

"Deadwood" was a FANTASTIC series!
Unfortunately, it was cancelled before they could finish the story and the wrap-up movie that was done several years later was a big disappointment...

Amazon Prime Video has DEADWOOD however it's only available to "buy". I'm not paying $23.00 per season to watch anything!

Hubby here. One of the best series ever is "The guns of Will Sonnett". Pretty old series, but anyone who enjoys a good western needs to watch this. Good gun slinging, and realy excellent story.

"The Guns of Will Sonnett" was a late 60s show I watched as a kid. Starred Walter Brennan.

There was another episode of "Sugarfoot" on TCM Movies early this morning. OMG, the young Will Hutchins is GORGEOUS, beautiful come-to-bed eyes and a nice sexy voice.

I also remember "Laramie" with John Smith, Robert Fuller and Spring Byington from the early 1960s. That had nice theme music too.

It was a sign of respect because Stanwyck was already a legendary movie star actress and revered within the industry.

I grew up watching the same westerns, gunsmoke, the rifleman, I remember wagon train, what was the one where it showed them breaking his sword, Branded ? So many great old western movies also

I remember Chuck Connors in "Branded" and "The Rifleman" and he was also the villain in "The Big Country", shown here last Saturday evening. I've still got the glorious music going round in my head.

I love the old TV westerns and consider Gunsmoke the greatest, Then Wagon Train and Rawhide. The Virginian had a sweeping theme.

I have watched 100s of western movies and so many classics to choose form. How about The Searchers and Red River?

The Tin Star was on t.v. here last week, excellent black-and-white Western from 1957 starring Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins.

I like the Spaghetti Western films by Sergio Leone with the legendary music composed by Ennio Morricone. “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is number one for me.

I consider Rawhide the greatest western TV series theme. Don't forget the Ballad of Palladin from Have Gun Will Travel.
