My mother used to make "tater cakes" from left over mashed taters and it looked like a salmon patty kinda. I liked them myself, I used to grow a big garden when I was a kid, only thing mom would let me out of the house for, and i grew redskinned taters and they make the best mashed taters in my opinion. mama's was nothing this fancy

Thanks for posting the official recipe, my mom made something similar, too, IF there was an abundance of leftover mashed potatoes. Really, the only time there may have been an abundance would have been at holidays. My mother’s formula for how many/much to prepare was one potato per person PLUS one for the pot. With that said, there was 5 of us so for most Sunday meals, six potatoes were peeled, boiled and mashed. In most instances, there were no leftovers…. She had a similar formula for eggs, two per person plus one for the pan. Eggs were not cooked to order, they were scrambled and you got what you got! 😊

Sounds like my family tea recipe, 1 teaspoon for each person and one for the pot.
By bella! [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 16:17 other posts
Apparently my mother’s logic is a worldwide logic! Thank you for sharing!
Our left-over potatoes are usually baked with whatever meat is close to expiration date, with some onions, mushrooms or left over vegetables, all in one pan.
It's not mashed, it's just stir-fried loosely.
We call it 'kliekjespan', which can be translated to 'leftovers bake'.
By bella! [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 16:34 other posts
Now that almost sounds like something we might call “hash”. Our most well known hash is corned beef hash which is basically shredded potatoes, onions and corned beef. There’s a roast beef hash which is the same thing however it’s just a matter of substituting corned beef for roast beef. Then there is Shepherd’s Pie, I believe that the original recipe is ground/minced lamb and gravy topped with cheese and mashed potatoes. I believe Americans have Americanized it by using ground beef (hamburger), topped by some type of vegetable (most often corn or mixed vegetables), then finally topped with mashed potatoes and cheese. Shepherd’s Pie is a deliciously satisfying, yet quick and easy meal.

I googled 'corned beef hash' and yes, that looks very similar.

You know I like grilled cheese and last week I tried something different. Instead of spreading the bread with butter, I tried mayonnaise. The bread grilled nicely and the cheese was gooey but the sandwich had a different flavor and I didn’t like it!
By t-rex [Ignore] 21,Jul,26 08:05 other posts
I have heard of people using mayo and it looks good from the ones I’ve seen, so I was guilted into trying it, but it’s not for me
By bella! [Ignore] 21,Jul,26 11:01 other posts
Ha! Thank you for confirming my thoughts, the flavor was definitely off!

I always have butter, mayonnaise (I’ve been buying Duke’s) and Miracle Whip on hand. Everything tastes better with butter and regarding mayo vs Miracle Whip, there’s things that I want to use mayo with and in the same token, sometimes I want Miracle Whip (it has a sweeter taste). Here’s a little story; back in the day, I was friends with someone who was 1 of 8 children. Money was tight and there wasn’t always jelly or jam available and they ate peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches. Now that’s something that I have no desire to try.
By t-rex [Ignore] 21,Jul,26 13:58 other posts
I like miracle whip, I was raised on it. Yes it is sweeter,,we didn’t have much growing up, so our go to was molasses sandwiches, I found out I have no desire for them anymore, since I tried one a couple weeks ago 😁

Mayo? On a grilled cheese sandwich? GROSS 🤮
By bella! [Ignore] 21,Jul,26 11:17 other posts
Mayo is basically an oil and so I wanted to see whether mayo could be substituted for butter as the agent on the bread meeting the frying pan. I didn’t like it, I won’t try it again.
By phart [Ignore] 21,Jul,26 13:43 other posts
Matter of fact I just had a sandwich with land o frost turkey and 2 kinds of shredded cheese grilled in 1 of those red copper mashy thingys you put on the stove burner, DUKES mayonnaise no less, and it was GOOD!

best I can do!

But> google says
A grilled cheese sandwich is a hot, toasted sandwich made by placing cheese between slices of bread, and cooking it in a pan, skillet, or pie iron until the bread is browned and the cheese is fully melted. Typically, the outside of the bread is coated in butter or mayonnaise to achieve a crispy texture

Youtube says it is a grilled cheese

This is a Dutch YouTube cooking channel that I watch a lot.
There's 3 grilled cheece sandwich recipes on it:

A 'tosti' is just any toasted sandwich, but most classically made with thin white bread, ham, and mild Gouda cheese.
With onions: only registered users can see external links
Flame-tosti: only registered users can see external links
Bulgogi tosti: only registered users can see external links

In my childhood, we had a 'stovetop sandwich toaster'. Now we have this one:

If you put the sandwich between a folded sheet of baking paper, there's no cleaning needed afterwards.

I don’t have a 3 in 1 contact grill, I know the device as a panini grill, because I’m old/old school. I don’t have any problem using a frying pan to make a grilled cheese, no need for a George Foreman grill to grill fish or steaks, I can use the same frying pan. I do like your tip on using parchment paper to minimize cleanup! Thanks for sharing!
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 23,Jul,26 06:29 other posts
Yeah, I don't know what they mean with the '3 in 1'. It's a grill and you can use it to grill many things, not just 3.
The only benefits of it is that you can grill both sides at once and that it presses the sides together. It's in a closet under a Römertopf dish that we never use,
so half of the time I cannot be bothered to get it, and I use a frying pan too.
By CAT52! [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 11:10 other posts
I use American cheese (real cheese, not the petroleum base one) between two slices of lightly toasted butter. I spread real butter inside the sandwich and place the cheese (2 slices) inside with two thin tomato slices. On a small skillet warmed to medium on my GE electric stove (setting of 5). I throw in a good 3 tablespoons of butter and spread it as it melts. Then I place the sandwich in the middle of the pan checking how brown the bottom slice gets. I don’t like it too crunchy. When it’s almost like I like it, I flip the sandwich. I don’t take the browning all the way because there’ll be some extra cooking when I flip it. When it’s toasted to where I like it I remove it and plate it. While waiting I heat up some sauerkraut and plate that too with a side of mustard.
That is my grilled cheese sandwich.

There is a lot of processed crap going around, but fortunately they are not making cheese from petroleum oils (yet).
The whole 'petroleum cheese' thing is actually a big misunderstanding that comes from a few specific things:

The 'Plastic' Confusion: The US FDA describes the process of making American processed cheese (like Kraft singles) as melting cheese into a "homogeneous plastic mass". People hear 'plastic' and think of oil-based synthetic materials, but the FDA just uses the word in its scientific sense to mean "pliable" or "moldable".

Imitation Cheese: Cheap fake cheese (often used on fast-food burgers or frozen pizzas) isn't real cheese. It is made by mixing milk proteins with vegetable oils like palm or canola oil. When melted, it can look greasy and synthetic, leading people to mistake it for mineral or petroleum oil.

The Wax Rind: The shiny wax coating around cheeses like Edam or Gouda does contain paraffin, which is a petroleum byproduct. However, this is just the packaging to protect the cheese, it is not part of the food itself and you are not supposed to eat it.

Artificial Colors: In the past, some bright yellow or orange processed cheeses used artificial food dyes (like Yellow 5 and 6) that are chemically derived from petroleum sources. Today, most brands have switched to natural plant extracts like annatto.

So while processed cheese definitely has its flaws, it's still based on dairy and plants, not crude mineral oil!"
By CAT52! [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 15:23 other posts
Ananas, I know that but you can’t tell me those cheese pieces don’t have a sheen that natural cheese doesn’t have.
By Ananas2xLekker [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 15:26 other posts
I'm not saying that it's 'natural' cheese. It's quickly processed crap,
instead of the 'natural' process that takes several weeks, at least.
Still, it's made of 'biological' ingredients and not 'chemical' ingredients.
Those are not accurate definitions, but they are commonly understood.

What is generally considered 'real' cheese is a dairy product made by coagulating milk into curds and whey, usually with the help of starter bacteria and rennet, and then processing (fermenting) the curds into the final cheese.
Those processed cheese slices sometimes contain 'real' cheese, but those are often low quality, like trimmings or off-spec batches. And then they put in additional ingredients and melt it.
The sheen is mostly because it's a more homogeneous mixture.

'Real' cheese isn't necessarily more healthy than 'artificial' cheese.
Some products are made from unsaturated vegetable oils, which are
healthier than milk fat, which is predominantly saturated fat.
By CAT52! [Ignore] 22,Jul,26 15:28 other posts
many processed cheeses and cheese products are made with added oils—typically vegetable oils like palm oil, soybean oil, or coconut oil. Manufacturers add these fats as a cost-effective way to replace dairy fats, improve creaminess, and help the cheese melt smoothly without separating. While traditional processed cheese is primarily made from natural cheeses blended with emulsifying salts and milk fats, mass-market or budget "cheese products" and "cheese analogues" often rely heavily on vegetable oils.

I LIKE MY CHEESE MADE OF MILK… PASTEURIZED. THE ONLY OTHER INGREDIENT I WANT IS THE LOVE OF THE CHEESE MAKER MAKING IT.

FYI, I try to consume natural foods all the time. Free range chicken. Vegetables grown without fertilizer. ETC.

Interesting it might be worth a try
By bella! [Ignore] 24,Jul,26 10:04 other posts
Do you spend much time outdoors? What’s the mosquito situation like in your neck of the woods? As far as I’m concerned, mosquitoes were much worse in Michigan vs Florida! Shoot, at night I would get “attacked” between the time that I left my car until the time I got into my house and if I let one of those bastards in, they buzzed around as they circled my head as I tried to sleep!

It is worth a try if you have some ground coffee. I was reading some of the 1200 plus comments and a number of them said that “used” coffee grounds could be used after they were completely dry. I was actually trying to find anything that supported “why” an aluminum foil bowl was needed. I did read a post where someone said they used a plate but my best GUESS is like a candle, having more wax/wick below the flame will ensure a longer burning time.
By dgraff [Ignore] 24,Jul,26 10:41 other posts
When I drank heavily mosquitoes left me alone I guess they didn’t like the Yukon Jack blood but now they go after me and I live in the woods so they are plentiful 24/7

If you have coffee grounds please give this a try and let me know if you think it works. I wonder whether one bowl of smoking coffee grounds will work or if 3, 4, 5 or more containers would be ideal!

And another thing that is eff'd up is that admin allows one person, licksipsuckit to be a moderator for so many groups, upwards of 400 groups, groups that she has no affiliation to. Yep, I was banned from participating in the group established for Americans. WHY? Because lix is the moderator.

/groups.php?id=6823

I think I'm going to try to join the group established for the gay men, but as you may have guessed, lix is the moderator for that one, too.

Hey, it's bullshit that a woman is the moderator of a group established for gay men.

Look at the groups that begin with an asterisk (*) and she is the moderator. She is moderator of over 400 groups.

Take a look for yourself, anything prefixed by her signature * is a group that she is the moderator of.

Yeah, right!

I joined the American group before and was kicked out by her. Crazy me, I wondered what an Australian could add to a group dedicated to and established for Americans and in taking my concern to admin, his suggestion was that I start suggested that I my own group. I just wonder why admin gives her so much latitude.

People create groups, then lose interest in them or leave the site altogether. Theredore long ago mechanics for transferring moderators position was implemented. Current moderator can transfer their rights to another member. Or, if current moderator ignores the group with some activity for more than 2 weeks, it is transferred automatically to the most active member. Most active in this case - the one who visits more often.

Exactly same happens with power in real life. If you don't care about something and don't want to spend your time on it - it often ends up in control of people you don't like. And then you are suddenly not happy.

Personally I don't care who runs the groups, I only care that someone does so I don't have to monitor them for some fishy activities. I did nothing to help lix get control of those groups, which means she got them simply because she was more interested in groups than any other member. So I don't see why I should do anything about this.
By bella! [Ignore] 28,Jan,19 15:46 other posts
So you don't find it unusual that she would be the moderator for over 400 groups?

When I joined United States group, I responded to 3 inquiries made but did not see anywhere where she made a contribution.

Sorry, admin, I think you are wrong to allow her this much authority and control.

By bella! [Ignore] 29,Jan,19 21:45 other posts
You realty think she "cares" about groups? Get your head out of the sand! (That is a way of saying you are ignoring what is happening) You have allowed her to be a moderator for over 400 groups. Moderators should be impartial and apparently, she can not be impartial. For her to kick me out of a group that was established for Americans solely because she does not like me is not what a moderator should be focusing on. In my opinion, the only thing she "cares" about is being "large and in charge" and you have allowed that to happen.

she is the moderator of a group I started a while back, I couldn't keep it going due to being hospitalized for a lengthy period, and when I returned she was in charge of it!These are the reasons I mined my own here and don't get involved with much, just enjoy the photos and the forums and the few friends I have made here.
