Hi Bella!, what Dean says is quite true except we don't refer to the Underground as a subway, only in Glasgow do they do that and that is just one circular line. London is vast and as well as the Underground, there are lots of main line railways into and out of the place which operate suburban services too. It can be confusing for visitors as a lot of what is known as the Underground runs on the surface too, extending out into the suburbs and countryside so it is not unusual, on the Central Line to Epping, for instance, to see trains meant for deep level tunnels in central London bouncing incongruously through woods and fields. The Underground is also operated by a separate body, Transport for London, who also operate the buses, whereas the main lines are operated by separate companies since the reprivatisation in the late 1990s. In some places, Underground trains and main line company trains run over the same tracks like on the outer recesses of the Metropolitan Line between Rickmansworth and Amersham, the former in Herfordshire and the latter in Buckinghamshire. In central London there are two types of Underground railway, the earliest lines being cut-and-cover sub-surface, the first part of which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013, and the deep-level lines that were bored through the clay, hence the description "tube". However, this term is now applied quite wrongly to the entire Underground system as the sub-surface lines are not "tubes" at all but its only transport queens who realise the difference, everyday commuters just refer to it as "the tube" regardless. I think you have to be a Londoner to really understand it and it also has the most ridiculous sky-high fares, the most expensive urban transit system in the world. Anyone staying here for a week or a fortnight will find they spend most of the money they have saved for their trip just getting about the place, it really is a piss-take compared to systems like the Paris Metro where you can get from one side of town to the other at a fraction of the cost of going just one stop in London.
